Langkawi Vacation 2010 - Part 3

Our 3rd day started wuth a hearty breakfast at Bayview Hotel Langkawi which we had checked in the day before. The Flamingo cafe was much more spacious than the one in Citin Hotel and the breakfast was also much better. The food was warm and varied. There were traditional and western styled breakfast, coffee and tea, fruit juices and cut fruits.
My wife had a more traditional breakfast - Mee goreng
with muffin and some potatoes..
I had toasted bread cold cuts and baked beans...Yummyyy !!!

My son prefers Coco - Krunch cereal breakfast...

Our first stop for the day was Dataran Lang. We had been here on our first night in Langkawi but the photos were quite dark and you couldn't really see the whole compound. As such, we decided to take more photos during the daylight hours. Apart from Dataran Lang, we also took some photos at the Legenda Langkawi, which is a stone structure with the Langkawi island archipelago map sculpted on it.

If you go to Langkawi, do make it a point to take photos in front
of this structure. It makes a great background.

Before it got any warmer we headed out to the Bird and Wildlife Park in the Pantai Kok district. Here, visitors are allowed to feed the animals. Food for the animals are being sold for RM6.00 per bag. I was quite impressed with the setting of the park. It looks more like a large aviary hence the name "Bird Park.." The walkway is covered and as such, it would be a good place to visit come rain or shine. We had the opportunity to take photos with a hornbill and a parrot and to my delight, a Burmese python. being a herpetofauna enthusiast I would never pass the chance to hold and take photos with this magnificent serpent.

My favourite animal...
The compound isn't that big so just take your time strolling in the park. Do try to feed the mousedeer, quails and if you're lucky, the budgerigars will come and rest on your hands ! But I would not suggest u to feed the ostriches though if you're not too brave with animals. certainly not for the young ones. They are strong and peck hard !! After about an hour of feeding the animals and petting them we exited the park.
This goat and a smaller billy goat keeps following me for food.

My wife and son enjoys feeding the animals
The ostriches are another story. Their size and brute force
of pecking for food scares some visitors.

Our next stop in the itinerary is the Snake Sanctuary which is located near kg Tok Senik in the Padang Mat Sirat district. But before that we made a quick stop at the Langkawi airport. We had actually looked for Air Asia's office in Langkawi but it seems that the only one available is at the airport. We wanted to upgrade our pre-purchase baggage allowance from 20 Kgs to 50 Kgs in anticipation of what we were going to bring home to KL. We reckon what we had purchased before would not be enough thus the decision to upgrade the allowance. After a quick lunch, we headed to the Snake Sanctuary.

I was very excited to visit this particular place. Being a herpetofauna enthusiast and an animal lover in general, places like this would always be in our itinerary. But upon arrival at the Snake Sanctuary the picture chages. The place wasn't as what I had expected. The interior of the park reflects exactly what it was from the outside. It leaves a lot to be desired. The only plus factor is the snake show and the photography with the snakes. The show is not spectacular though with the "charmers" playing and teasing a Mangrove snake (Boiga dendrophilla melanota) and 2 monocled cobras (Naja kouthia). The last snake taken out was the Burmese python (Python molurus) of which I had the opportunity to have a photo with.

At least my RM10 per person entry fee was not in vain after all. We spent about 45 minutes watching the show and the few snakes in their enclosures. This place needs more maintenance and the occupants deserves a better living quarters !

Having been disappointed with what the Snake Sanctuary had to offer, we proceeded to Langkawi Underwater World. Now this is a place that you would not want to miss. We felt lucky as we bought the "passport" at the MATTA Fair back in KL. The entrance fee of RM28 for adults and RM18 for children would cost us RM74.00 just for entry to this place. We paid RM105 for 3 "passports" which is way worth it.
The Underwater World consist of a few sections aptly named the Tropical Rainforest, Freshwater section, Sub-Antarctic section, marine invertebrates and such. Here you'll get to see variuos species of freshwater and marine fishes, seals and 2 species of penguins. The enclosures are so thoughtfully constructed that it allows you to view these animals on dry land and also underneath the water. You can see the seals and penguins swimming underwater and at one tunnel, penguins swimming above your head. At one of the sections, you'll get to feel being underwater with fish swimming from all sides including above your head.

The Underwater World in Langkawi is no Aquaria in KLCC but it'll be worth the visit. By the way, there are duty free shops next door to the Underwater World which u might want to stop for a bit of shopping.
We found one of the brand of chocolate is cheaper here than the town of Kuah which we had surveyed earlier.

This was a fascinating place for us. I may not be at par with Aquaria at
KLCC but it is a place worth the visit if its the first time you are in Langkawi
On our way back to the hotel, we stopped by Idaman Suri, Hj Ismail Groups, Langkawi Saga and Dwi Idaman. These are shops that makes duty free shopping the biggest attraction in Langkawi. You will find everything from tablewares, kitchenwares, household accessories and chocolates. At Idaman Suri, we saw buses load of people disembarking. At the rows of shops which is the location of famous shops of which I mentioned above, people were in a buying frenzy. Ladies go wild while the men folk patiently waits.

These are few of the shops that is a favourite among shopper in Langkawi
As for us, we were so tired that the only thing on our mind was to retire to our hotel. Having bought takeaway food, we did just that spending the night packing our things for the trip back the next day.

The last day of our vacation were spent at the poolside where my son enjoyed his time swimming. The swimming poll of this Bayview hotel is located on the 4th floor of the building. The view was great as you can actually see all around. On one side is the sea and on the other side you can see the Kuah town area. The pool is quite big but the wading pool is rather small. It was fortunate that there was not many children at that time.

By 10.30am, we had already checked out of the hotel to head for the airport to board our flight back to KL at 12.40 pm. It was a memorable trip though tired. We would savour the time we had while in the legendary island of Langkawi and definitely will be back again in the near future !
